The 30 Best Jordans To Release In May

So you can brush up on past history, we take a look back and highlight the 30 best Jordans to release in the month of May through the years. With May being in the heart of spring and just before summer, you know Nike/Jordan Brand was dropping low top heat, as well as plenty of predominantly white-based iterations. But perhaps the all-time best May release dropped just over 15 years ago with the black/cement Jordan IV retro, complete the ‘Nike Air’ logo on the heel. Either way, take a look and let us know in the comments section below what your all-time favorite May Jordan release has been or if you still have some of these classics on ice.

Air Jordan IV Black/Cement

Release Date: 5/5/1999

How can you have a best of May Jordans list without including the Air Jordan IV Black/Cement? You can’t, that’s how. Sure, we’ve seen a few retros of these legendary sneakers over the past decade or so. But 1999’s retro, the first for the Air Jordan IV, was the last one we’ve seen with the original Nike Air logo on it, instead of the Jumpman. Come on JB, give us those Retro ’89s!

Air Jordan V "Laney"

Release Date: 5/10/2000

Even though the Air Jordan V “Laney” wasn’t an OG colorway, prior to the 2013 retro, you wouldn’t have known it judging from the thirst in the sneaker world. Fortunately for us, the sneaker gods blessed us with a retro of this long-overdue release, originally from May 2000.

Air Jordan XI Low "Pink Snakeskin"

Release Date: 5/26/2001

Not to be outdone by the men’s navy “Snakeskin” XI Low, don’t forget, the ladies also got fitted back in May 2001 with this dope ‘Pink Snakeskin’ colorway. Interestingly, back in ’01, the pink women’s pair actually sold out faster than the men’s navy pair. Believe it or not, the men’s colorway even hit discount prices on Eastbay!!! Unthinkable nowadays.

Air Jordan XI Low "Snakeskin"

Release Date: 5/26/2001

Perhaps the most desired Air Jordan XI Low of all time, the navy “Snakeskin” was also a May release back in 2001. There’s not much else to say about this one that hasn’t already been said, so we’ll just put in a public request for Jordan Brand to retro this one already.

Air Jordan IX "Flint"

Release Date: 5/4/2002

We’ve gone on record several times in favor of the Air Jordan IX…we think it’s one of the most underrated silhouettes in the Jordan vault. And this “Flint” colorway, from May 2002, is no different. Another non-OG IX colorway, this gem from ’02 is welcome to retro any time now.

Air Jordan VIII "Chrome"

Release Date: 5/3/2003

Though they’ve been rumored for a retro for sometime now, the Air Jordan VIII “Chrome” remains un-retro’ed since it’s original May 2003 release. Sure, it’s not an OG colorway. But when it looks that clean, does that really matter?

Air Jordan XI Low IE Charcoal & White/Cobalt

Release Date: 5/24/2003

With all the attention that the Air Jordan XI Lows get nowadays, the silo’s original low top “IE” iterations often get forgotten. And though we’ve received a retro of the ‘Charcoal’ IE relatively recently, the first and only retro of the ‘White/Cobalt’ pair was back in May 2003. Sure, the colorway may not be for everyone…but that’s how we prefer it!

Air Jordan XII "Melo"

Release Date: 5/15/2004

Though it wasn’t an official Carmelo Anthony PE, the similarities of May 2004’s Air Jordan XII with the Denver Nuggets team colors obviously didn’t go unnoticed. Regardless of the official PE designation, these are some dope sneakers. Originally, they dropped as a women’s exclusive, only to be followed up in May with men’s sizes. We can think of a few colorways we’d like to see more of that from!

Air Jordan XII Low "Taxi"

Release Date: 5/22/2004

One of the best colorways of the Air Jordan XII, the “Taxi” makeup, looks just as awesome, if not more so, as a low top. Perfect for spring/summer time stunting, the “Taxi” lows first dropped in May 2004.

Air Jordan X "Steel"

Release Date: 5/7/2005

Outside of the legendary “City Pack,” there is perhaps no more popular colorway of the Air Jordan X silo than the gorgeous “Steel” makeup. We love these so much, JB can drop ’em every year if they like…we could always use a fresh pair.

Air Jordan IV "White Laser"

Release Date: 5/14/2005

Sure, the “Rare Air” Air Jordan IV Laser releases weren’t everyone’s cup of tea…but we love them. The white Lasers dropped in May 2005, only to be followed up later that year by the fan-favorite black pair. We really wish we hadn’t slept on these beauties…and we’re sure we aren’t the only ones.

Air Jordan IV "Tour Yellow"

Release Date: 5/20/2006

May 20th, 2006 was a crazy day for Jordan heads. Not only were we blessed with the great Air Jordan IV “Tour Yellow,” but that same day Jordan Brand dropped two additional, and equally awesome, AJ IV colorways. Unfortunately for those of us who slept on these “Tour Yellows” (for one reason or another), we’ve yet to see any more in retro form…hint, hint JB.

Air Jordan IV "Black Cat"

Release Date: 5/20/2006

Another banger from May 20th, 2006, the “Black Cat” Air Jordan IV might be the most versatile colorway of the Jordan IV. That murdered-out upper just works with everything.

Air Jordan IV "Pure Money"

Release Date: 5/20/2006

The Yang to the Black Cat IV’s Yin are the beautiful all-white Air Jordan IV “Pure Money.” Though we do love the all-white look, it’s tough because we think they just got dirty looking at the picture too hard.

Air Jordan III "Pure Money"

Release Date: 5/12/2007

Pure money is right! Has there ever been a more appropriately named sneaker than this all-white Air Jordan III from May 2007? An all-white sneaker just doesn’t get much better looking than these jewels…just beautiful.

Air Jordan I "Armed Forces Pack"

Release Date: 5/24/2008

Understatement of the week alert: The Air Jordan I has seen a ton of different colorways hit it’s iconic silhouette. And, because of that, many are forgotten over time, which is why we’re reminding you of May 2008’s terrific “Armed Forces” pack that brought us these two great colorways.

Air Jordan 17/6 Collezione Pack

Release Date: 5/24/2008

One of the most desirable CDP/Collezione packs, the 6/17 pack, dropped in May 2008. The reason it was so highly in-demand? It was the first time the Air Jordan VI “Carmine” was retro’ed since the original 1991 release. We’re not hating on the XVII, but it was nothing more than an afterthought here.

Air Jordan V "Raging Bull" Pack

Release Date: 5/23/2009

If it weren’t for the VI/XI DMP pack, May 2009’s Air Jordan V “Raging Bull” pack may be the best JB pack to ever drop. We’re still kicking ourselves for missing out on this one. Hey JB…retro or nah?

Air Jordan XII "Nubuck"

Release Date: 5/30/2009

The “Nubuck” Air Jordan XII is an interesting piece of Jordan Brand history. Back in 2003, when it originally released, it was the first Jordan sneaker to be sold exclusively online (via, the first pair to be sold as a pack (pairing it with a matching hoodie and hat) and it was the first JB release to break the $200 threshold. All of which is to say, the OG Nubucks left a lot of sneakerheads empty handed. Which is why everyone rejoiced when JB brought ’em back in numbers in 2009 as a solo release for a retail price of $150. Nice.

Air Jordan XI "Silver Anniversary"

Release Date: 5/1/2010

Oh the “Silver Anniversary” Air Jordan XI…so very, very dope. If you were lucky enough to get your hands on these all white XIs, you better double check for that Jumpman logo. As most of us know, these XIs were special because of their lack of a Jumpman logo. However, at release, JB mixed in 25 pairs that included the Jumpman logo, which made them some of the rarest (and most expensive) Jordans of all time. Jumpman logo or not, the shoe is Dylan…HOT FIYAH!

Air Jordan VI "Lakers"

Release Date: 5/15/2010

Another highly slept-on Jordan dropping in May? We’re starting to see a trend here. Though MJ tormented the Lakers throughout his NBA career, he was nice enough to drop these “Lakers” Air Jordan VIs as a make-good. Though Lakers die-hards (ha!) may disagree, we think it’s a pretty solid consolation.

Air Jordan II Retro QF White/Black-Red

Release Date: 5/22/2010

One of the OG colorways of the Jordan II, JB brought back the white/black-varsity red iteration as a “Quarter Finals” edition in 2010. Staying true to the original, these featured the ‘NIKE’ stamp at the top of the back heel.

Jordan VII Retro "Year of the Rabbit"

Release Date: 5/7/2011

Many folks understandably get these beauties mixed up with the OG “Hare” Jordan VIIs. But the “Year of the Rabbit” VIIs are amazing in their own right. Building on the color-blocking that made the original so popular, May 2011’s drop mixes in a few hits of gold for that luxurious look. These are clean.

Air Jordan V 'Wolf Grey'

Release Date: 5/14/2011

Another highly underrated ‘new’ Air Jordan V colorway, May 2011’s ‘Wolf Grey,’ is a great shoe. Versatile and iconic, we’re actually a little frustrated by the ‘Wolf Grey’ V…not that we slept, but that we didn’t double up on ’em.

Air Jordan XI Low White/Varsity Red

Release Date: 5/5/2012

It’s obvious that the Air Jordan XI is the go-to low top for JB, and with good reason…the shoe is just perfect for summer time wear. And these white/varsity red lows are no exception. Just ask anyone who thought they’d be easy to cop. We certainly struck out…

Air Jordan IV "Cavs"

Release Date: 5/12/2012

“Knicks” or “Cavs,” whatever you want to call them, these Air Jordan IVs from May 2012 are awesome. Not only do they appease two rabid basketball and sneaker fan bases by using their team’s respective color-scheme, but they also remind us of one of MJ’s iconic moments, “The Shot,” over the Cavs’ Craig Ehlo, during which MJ rocked the AJ IV.

Air Jordan V “Grape”

Release Date: 5/4/2013

As 80s/90s babies, the Air Jordan V “Grape” is relevant to our interests. Whether it be memories of the Fresh Prince, or simply keeping the sneaker closet fresh, we’re always down for a “Grape” retro. Always.

Air Jordan VIII "Suns"

Release Date: 5/18/2013

Look, we know the Air Jordan VIII isn’t for everyone. But for fans of the silhouette, 2013’s “Suns” drop was a welcome one. Paying homage to the fantastic 1993 Finals matchup that saw MJ square off with Sir Charles Barkley, these VIIIs are excellent.

Air Jordan I Retro High OG "Black Toe"

Release Date: 5/25/2013

The definition of an OG. Though the Air Jordan I “Black Toe” may not even be the most popular colorway of the AJI silo, it’s got a special place in the hearts of sneakerheads everywhere…ours included. This 2013 retro went quick!

Air Jordan III White/Cement Retro '88 (Online Restock)

Release Date: 5/25/2013

We know that restocks have set the world (and ISP servers) a blaze lately, but this 2013 restock of one of the year’s toughest sneaker cops, the Air Jordan III Retro ’88, was one of our favorites. Though they didn’t originally drop in May, Nike blessed us with a restock around Memorial Day weekend. We hope NDC has another one up their sleeves this year.
