The Complete Colorway Ranking Of The Air Jordan 4

jordan-4-colorway-ranking-KD

It started with four colorways back in 1989 and as time has passed, there’s no question that the Air Jordan IV is one of the most beloved in the storied signature line. From the OG ‘Cement’ makeups to newer iterations such as the “Toro” and “Fear” releases, with just one scan of this list it’s easy to see that the Jordan 4 has a very strong colorway catalog. And fans of the silo have to be extremely excited to see both the ‘Columbia’ and “Oreo” makeups re-releasing next year in remastered form. The only question is, which ranks as your all-time favorite? Please feel free to let us know in the comments section below.

PLEASE NOTE that colorways considered were ones that released to the public; GS/youth specific colorways were not considered as well

22: White/Sand (Women's)

Year(s) Released: 2006

The white/sand makeup was the one and only women’s edition of the Air Jordan 4 Retro. Released in ladies sizes only, the fact they were for women keeps most people away from them. The colorway isn’t all that bad, however, the small hits of blue weren’t needed.

21: White/Classic Green

Year(s) Released: 2004

A clean makeup, the downfall of this colorway was the lack of quality, as well as how fast the netting turned yellow on this pair. Throw on the paint chipping and the use of green as an accent color, this Air Jordan 4 Retro was either loved or hated.

20: Cavs

Year(s) Released: 2012

While they resemble a “Knicks” colorway more, the story and inspiration behind this colorway couldn’t get most people over the fact that they look a lot like some of the fakes that have been floating around for a few years.

19: Doernbecher

Year(s) Released: 2011

The “Doernbecher” Air Jordan 4 Retro took Jordan DB releases to a whole new level. Originally released in 2011, they were the first pair to come in both men’s and kid’s sizes. They also introduced a full translucent outsole to the AJ4 for the first time.

18: Green Glow

Year(s) Released: 2013

The ‘Green Glow’ Air Jordan 4 Retro might not have anything wrong with it, but they’re not a colorway most people first think about when they think of the AJ4. Maybe if the grey upper was all one tone and the white midsole was changed, things could’ve been different. They’re still nice, just not as awesome as other colorways.

17: Mist Blue

Year(s) Released: 2006

While not the most popular Air Jordan 4 Retro release of 2006, there isn’t much wrong with this colorway. They give off a Denver Nuggets type of vibe with their use of blue and golden yellow. Releasing alongside the “Mars” edition did not help them catch many people’s eyes as everyone was too keen on the first retro of the OG ‘Fire Reds.’

16: White Laser

Year(s) Released: 2005

In 2005, Jordan Brand ushered in a new design on the Air Jordan XX, laser print. They applied this design to the entire upper of this original AJ4 colorway. While we were still a year away from the GR release of the “Mars Blackmon” edition, people showed some interest in these. The fact they were an online exclusive made for them to either be hard to get, or easy to forget.

15: Black Laser

Year(s) Released: 2005

Much like the “White Laser” edition, the “Black Laser” pair wasn’t very well received, despite their very limited availability. But at a time when many people were hoping for a black/cement re-release, if you could get your hands on these, you did so.

14: Bling, Bling / Pure $

Year(s) Released: 2000, 2006, 2010

While 2000s “Bling, Bling” release and the “Pure $” edition are technically different, their colorway is exactly the same. The “Pures” are basically a new version of the “Bling, Bling” with OG AJ4 styling in place of the Retro+ perforated versions. If you love the AJ4 and needed a crisp pair of all white kicks, these were perfect.

13: White/Tour Yellow

Year(s) Released: 2006

A classic Air Jordan IV design made its way onto this limited ‘Rare Air’ edition of the Air Jordan 4 Retro in 2006. Featuring yellow cement print detailing, a white-based leather upper and detachable tongue tags, this new colorway was one every AJ4 fan needed in their lineup.

12: Cool Grey

Year(s) Released: 2004

After the popularity of ‘Cool Grey’ rose with 2000s Air Jordan 11 Retro, it was only fitting we would see it applied on other models. While this pair featured hits of maize, they are so subtle that they don’t hurt this colorway at all.

11: Thunder

Year(s) Released: 2006, 2012

Originally an online exclusive in 2006, the “Thunder” Air Jordan 4 Retro came in an all-new black and tour yellow colorway. Simple in design, they feature a black-based nubuck upper with yellow accents. They stayed high in demand, mostly due to their limited availability. Jordan Brand released them in stores for the first time in 2012, which appeased fans all over.

10: Lightning

Year(s) Released: 2006

When the “Thunder and Lightning” Pack was originally released in 2006, more people liked the “Thunder” colorway due to its black-based upper. The tide has changed a little bit now though as bright colors seem to attract more attention and the fact that the “Lightning” pair has yet to be re-released.

9: Columbia

Year(s) Released: 1999, 2015 (scheduled)

The first Air Jordan 4 Retro+ release. They introduced a new look to the AJ4, with perforated holes on the tongue and side panels in place of the traditional mesh netting found on the OGs. A popular colorway that is always a fan favorite of Jordan heads, they have been very sought after since their original release in 1999. So much so that JB is bringing them back in 2015 as part of the highly anticipated Remastered Program.

8: Fear

Year(s) Released: 2013

One of the best Air Jordan 4 Retro releases to date. The “Fear” edition came in a clean colorway, with a full nubuck upper split in three colors to go along with white accents and speckled midsole. Perfectly executed and the quality was on point too.

7: Black Cat

Year(s) Released: 2006

You can’t go wrong with all-black sneakers. Especially when they’re on one of the most popular pairs of all-time. The “Black Cat” Air Jordan 4 Retro was a must have release in 2006. If they were re-released, everyone would be okay with that.

6: Oreo

Year(s) Released: 1999, 2015 (scheduled)

The “Oreo” Air Jordan 4 Retro+ kept the same design as the ‘Columbia’ edition, featuring perforations in place of the traditional mesh netting. The use of cement print along with quality leather made this pair a fan favorite. They have been so sought after that Jordan Brand is bringing them back for a second release in 2015.

5: Toro

Year(s) Released: 2013

Usually a new colorway does not make its way to the top of an all-time list right away, however, this “Toro” edition of the Air Jordan 4 Retro is so nice, it belongs in the top five. The red-based upper with black, cement grey and white accents made for a perfect colorway.

4: Fire Red

Year(s) Released: 1989, 2006, 2012

The final original Air Jordan IV colorway, released in 1989. It took over twenty-three years for Jordan Brand to bring them back in their OG form. The first retro featured a Mars Blackmon logo on the heel and prior to that, laser print covered the entire upper. No matter what variations have released, nothing beats the original look of the ‘Fire Red’ AJ4.

3: Military Blue

Year(s) Released: 1989, 2006, 2012

While the re-releases may have tainted these OGs a bit, for many years they were regarded as one of the best. We still feel that way and because of that, we keep them at number three.

PAIRS FOR SALE

2: White/Cement

Year(s) Released: 1989, 1999, 2012

A close second, so close they leave the number one with no breathing room. If you prefer white-based kicks, this pair is top for you. If not, it’s second…but not by much. The unique cement-print detailing was a nice touch to this colorway.

PAIRS FOR SALE

1: Black/Cement

Year(s) Released: 1989, 1999, 2008, 2012

Much like the Air Jordan III, both ‘Cement’ editions of the Air Jordan IV could stake claim to the #1 spot. As we prefer the look of the black-based pair, we had to go with that colorway for the top of this list.
