The 15 Best Anniversary-Themed Trainers Of The Last Decade

With today’s ‘Bright Crimson’ Nike Air Max 2015 release celebrating 25 years of running, we look back at 15 of the best anniversary-themed trainers over the last decade.

Entries are listed in chronological release year order

David Z. x Asics Gel Lyte III "Stainless Steel & Solid Gold" Pack

Release Year: 2007
Anniversary Celebration: 25-Year Anniversary of David Z.

Oh yeah, GOLD! Back in his pre-KITH days, Ronnie Fieg got his start in sneakers working behind the scenes at NY staple shop David Z. Eventually moving his way into sneaker design, Ronnie helped Asics crank out two wild Gel Lyte III makeups to celebrate David Z’s 25 years in business. Look, we get it: they’re not for everyone. But man, these IIIs are crazy.

Patta x Nike Air Max 1 Anniversary Pack

Release Year: 2009
Anniversary Celebration: 5-Year Anniversary of Patta

Okay, so perhaps this one should have a bit of an asterisk. Not only are there five different sneakers in the pack, but they all dropped at different times over the course of a few months. But they’re just too good not to include here. What started out as a celebration of the 5th anniversary of Amsterdam-based shop Patta, really resulted in one of the greatest sneaker collab series in footwear history. Truly some of the dopest Air Max 1s of all time.

size? x Nike Air Stab "Neon Pack"

Release Year: 2010
Anniversary Celebration: 10-Year anniversary of size?

UK retailer size? has remained one of the game’s premier sneaker collaborators for much longer than a lot of people realize. Working alongside legendary sneaker artist Dave White back in 2005, they dropped a fantastic “re-imagining” of the OG “Neon” colorway on the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90. Also known as the “Wet Paint” pack, it wasn’t until 2010, for Size’s 10th anniversary, did we get a look at the third and final colorway from that collab: this fire Nike Air Stab. Unfortunately for us stateside sneakerheads, they only released 400 of these beauties, exclusively at size?.

HECTIC x mita sneakers x New Balance MT580 10th Anniversary "BKX"

Release Year: 2010
Anniversary Celebration: 10-Year Anniversary of the first mita x New Balance collaboration

One of our favorite New Balance sneakers of all time came in 2010 when HECTIC and mita sneakers combined like Voltron, yet again, to bless the world with their talents. These ‘Woodgrain’ MT580s, made for the 10th anniversary of the trio’s collaborative relationship, look like nothing we’d seen before, and nothing we’ve seen since. This is another love-them-or-hate-them sneaker. But, we think they’re gorgeous.

Hanon x New Balance 1500 "Chosen Few"

Release Year: 2012
Anniversary Celebration: 30-Year Anniversary of the New Balance Flimby (UK) factory

UK-based footwear purveyor Hanon has been putting in work with the good folks over at New Balance for quite some time now. But one of our favorite results from that partnership arrived in 2012, for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the New Balance Flimby (UK) factory. Putting together fire collabs pieced together with some of the finest materials available, the workers at Flimby got the nod with an appropriately excellent sneaker release.

Sneaker Freaker x New Balance 998 "Tassie Devil"

Release Year: 2012
Anniversary Celebration: 10-Year Anniversary of the Magazine

Since 2002, Australia-based Sneaker Freaker have consistently put out some of the best sneaker content in the game. And not only are their publication and website top-notch, but they’ve also proven to possess an excellent eye for sneaker design. Pairing with the folks at New Balance, team Sneaker Freaker cooked up this awesome purple-hued 998 for their 10th anniversary in 2012. A homage of sorts to Solebox’s “Devil” collabs, Sneaker Freaker took inspiration from their own back yard, dubbing this beauty the “Tassie Devil.” BEAST!

Solebox x Reebok Workout Plus 25th Anniversary "Tilapia"

Release Year: 2012
Anniversary Celebration: 25-Year Anniversary of the silo

When discussing the best trainers of all time, rarely is Reebok’s Workout Plus brought into contention. But that’s a shame because it’s such an excellent silhouette. And, in 2012, for it’s 25th anniversary, Reebok worked with 25 of the world’s top collaborators to create their own unique spin on this footwear classic. And, as usual, the boys at Solebox showed why they are some of the best to ever do it with their “Tilapia” iteration. Done up in beautiful brown fishscale, these Workouts were crazy-limited, but definitely our favorite of the 25th-anniversary project.

WOEI x Asics Gel Lyte III "Cervidae"

Release Year: 2013
Anniversary Celebration: 5-Year Anniversary of WOEI

Knowing the pedigree of the minds behind WOEI “Patta’s Pret a Porter,” when we heard they were doing a collaboration with Asics to celebrate their 5th anniversary, we knew it was going to be awesome. But we didn’t expect this. In an attempt to capture the essence of the great outdoors, the design team at WOEI added metal trail hooks in place of the traditional eyelets. Zig-zag stitching and 3M hits throughout capped off an excellent and unorthodox color palette. Certainly one of the best Asics collabs in recent years.

Nike Air Max Lunar90 "Moon Landing"

Release Year: 2014
Anniversary Celebration: 45-Year Anniversary of the Moon Landing

We always joke around these parts about Nike wanting to celebrate anything just to drop a commemorative sneaker. Seriously, the first Air Max Day coincided with the Air Max 1/87s 27th(?) anniversary. But anyhow, sometimes that works in our favor. Like in 2014 when Nike decided to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the moon landing with these awesome reflective Air Max Lunar90s. Pairing one of its latest midsole technology’s with a flashy print on top of the iconic AM90 silo made these a must-cop for a lot of individuals.

Wings + Horns x New Balance MT580

Release Year: 2014
Anniversary Celebration: 10-Year Anniversary of the brand

Often times in footwear design, simplicity is best. And the New Balance that Canadian label Wings + Horns cooked up for their 10th anniversary embodies that ‘less is more’ aesthetic. Giving us one of our favorite NB silos, the MT580, in ultra-premium black leather & suede just screams awesome. These are our grown-ass man shoes!

Burn Rubber x Reebok Instapump Fury "20th Anniversary"

Release Year: 2014
Anniversary Celebration: 20-Year Anniversary of the silo

Detroit-based sneaker shop Burn Rubber is a criminally underrated collaborator. Seriously, look at their back catalog and recognize some real design talent! And they flexed that talent last year, for the 20th anniversary of Reebok’s revolutionary Instapump Fury. Burn Rubber more than held their own alongside a handful of the world’s top sneaker collaborators, creating these excellent gum-soled Instapumps. We didn’t expect them to be, but these may have been our favorite from all the Instapump releases last year.

Nike 10th Anniversary "Genealogy of Free" Black Pack

Release Year: 2014
Anniversary Celebration: 10-Year Anniversary of the OG Free

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Nike Free OG, the swoosh boys dropped two fantastic “Genealogy of Free” packs, featuring some of the best Free tech it had to offer. However, perhaps we’re just old, but the second drop, the “Black Pack” is what really appealed to us. The OGs were nice, but that clean black/cement/speckle palette here is minimalism at it’s best. Just look at the Prestos…seriously!

Sneakersnstuff x Reebok Instapump Fury "20th Anniversary"

Release Year: 2014
Anniversary Celebration: 20-Year Anniversary of the silo

Sweedish sneaker shop Sneakersnstuff has, time and time again, proven themselves some of the best collaborators in the game today. And they demonstrated that with their participation in the 20th-anniversary design of the Reebok Instapump Fury last year. What’s interesting about these sneakers is that, if you told us about the materials and colors involved, we wouldn’t expect to like the sneaker as much as we do. But here we are! Apparently grey fleece, a turquoise pump, and maroon outsole and lining go very well together.

Packer Shoes x Asics Gel-Lyte III "Dirty Buck"

Release Year: 2015
Anniversary Celebration: 25-Year Anniversary of the silo

Teaneck’s own Packer Shoes has been putting out some fantastic collabs as of late. Whether they are exclusive retros, ultra-limited PEs, or straight-up collabs, Packer should be considered near the top of the sneaker echelon. And this year, in celebration of the Gel Lyte IIIs 25th anniversary, Packer dropped some of our all-time favorite Asics. That’s right, we said it! The “Dirty Bucks” are an absolutely beautiful pair of shoes, and rightly belong amongst the greatest Asics releases of all time. Being one of the first drops from the celebratory pack, other shops have a very high bar to reach.

Concepts x Asics Gel-Lyte III "Boston Tea Party"

Release Year: 2015
Anniversary Celebration: 25-Year Anniversary of the silo

Of course, we couldn’t do a list like this and not include the good folks up at Concepts. They have been putting out so much heat lately it’s been hurting our credit. No, seriously. Stop it guys. While Packer lit up the internet with the super-limited “Dirty Bucks,” Concepts went the patriotic route for its anniversary makeup and gave us the beautiful “Boston Tea Party” Gel Lyte IIIs. Just special enough to put your hand to your heart and say the Pledge of Allegiance, right?
