20 Sneakers To Wear In Summer Instead Of Sandals

Summertime is all about staying cool while still enjoying the warm weather. And for those of us who love sneakers, you want options you can wear even when it's hot. Here, we highlight 20 different styles that you'll want to break out this summer, or start looking for now, so you don't always have to go with sandals. From Nike Flyknit to adidas Primeknit, tech has come a long way on trainers recently and these kicks are not only durable, but they're all super lightweight and breathable which is key when the temps start to heat up. Take a look and let us know in the comments section below which is your go-to sneaker to wear in summer instead of sandals.

adidas Pure Boost

The warmer months are all about plush comfort, and adidas knocked it out of the park with their (relatively) new Boost technology. Perfectly blending form and function, the new adidas Pure Boost draws a clean aesthetic from the brand’s Y-3 line, while keeping it real on the performance front. Really comfy.

Nike Kukini

Sure, the Nike Kukini silhouette isn’t for everybody. It is pretty wild. But try a pair on, and they just might sway you. Pairing ‘outside the box’ lace-less technology with Free 5.0 soles, these are plush for summertime.

adidas ZX Flux and ZX Flux Weave

Another example of the “Marque aux Trois Bandes” really stepping the game up lately, has been the introduction of the adidas ZX Flux. Hitting the market in a wide variety of colors and materials (including the dope Flux Weave), the ZX Flux is on pace to give Nike’s Roshe a run for the money. And with the introduction of their crazy ambitious mi adidas ZX Flux Photo Print app (seriously, check it out), the Flux has a bright future ahead.

Nike Solarsoft Moccasin

Another love-it-or-leave-it silo from the Swoosh boys, the Solarsoft Moccasin is most certainly proper summertime footwear. The lightweight mesh upper and cushy foam outsole, coupled with a wide array of styles, both loud and subtle, make these kicks like Goldilocks in summertime: jussst right.

Nike Free Trainer 5.0

Summertime also means training season for those fall sports, which makes Nike’s latest Free Trainer 5.0 hit right on time. So far, we’ve seen a few dope colorways. But the standouts are certainly the fantastic “Paid in Full” and “Jerry Rice” editions. In the gym or out, these lightweight trainers are banging.

adidas Originals ZX 500 OG Weave

Oh these are super clean. Taking the OG adidas ZX 500 and throwing a breathable woven upper on it, brings these babies to the next level. Yeah, you could catch us in these all summer long.

Nike Flyknit Lunar2

Ah, the Flyknit Lunar2. Improving on one of our favorites silhouettes from 2013, the Flyknit Lunar2 is just an essential staple of the summertime sneakerhead. Whether hitting the gym, getting a run on, or just chilling wherever, it doesn’t get much more comfortable than this. Trust.

Nike Roshe Run "Gold Trophy" Pack

While we’d like to believe Nike is also clairvoyant, and they put out their “Gold Trophy” pack to predict a trophy for the US in the upcoming World Cup, some dope shoes are a decent consolation prize. Delivered on a variety of iconic Nike silos, including one of our favorites, the Roshe Run, the Gold Trophy Roshe is going to be an amazing summer sneaker.

Nike Flyknit Chukka (Lunar or Free-soled)

Oh, and if the trainer style isn’t really for you, the Flyknit silo also comes in a Chukka model. The Lunar versions are some of the most comfortable sneakers we own and recently we’ve seen Nike slap a sweet Free sole on them in some fantastic colorways. Ah, summer. BBQs, sunshine and Flyknit. These truly are like socks for your feet and you won’t believe how light they are until you have them in your hands.

adidas Y3 Yohji Boost

Okay, so we know there are a lot of barriers to entry on these upcoming bangers from adidas. Limited numbers, high prices and a new-found hype surrounding the upper-end of adidas labels, makes the adidas Y3 Yohji Boost a tough get. But seriously, just look at them. Beautiful. Picking sandals over these? Child please.

Invincible x Reebok Instapump Fury

No doubt, we’ve seen plenty of collabs on the Reebok Instapump Fury. And the silo may not be for everyone. But this upcoming release, from Taiwanese brand Invincible, is one of our favorites yet. That floral patter on the upper just screams summertime and the openness of the design will still keep you cool. Plain and simple, these are gorgeous.

adidas Originals Primeknit 3.0

Adidas is really coming after that Nike market. Not only do they have the “Roshe-killer” ZX Flux, the crazy comfort of Boost technology, and the big-ticket endorsements from some of the biggest names in music, but adidas also has its own knitted technology with Primeknit. Just another great trainer you will barely even know you’re wearing.

Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit

Nike had some real success the past few years when pairing that wonderful Flyknit technology with their tried-and-true Free outsoles. And their latest entry in the series, the Free 4.0 Flyknit is a winner. We’re particularly fond of their retread of the hugely popular “Multicolor” makeup, but we’re starting to see Nike really come through with some true heat in the colorway department, like these awesome Bright Crimson bangers.

adidas Element Refine JS

When you think of eco-friendly, hippies and sandals often spring to mind. But don’t fret fellow green sneakerheads, adidas has you covered. Utilizing 90% recycled PET materials and a solid-pieced upper, the adidas Element Refine are perfect for the warmer months. Style and performance all in one package.

Nike Free Hyperfeel

Okay, so the Nike Free Hyperfeel is technically a running shoe. But with the low-profile and crazy Hyperfeel soles, you can rock these babies all summer long. Hey, if you’re looking for low-profile, the Free Hyperfeel is head and shoulders above the sandal option.

adidas Primeknit Pure Boost

Another tough-to-get recent adi release, the Solar Blue Primeknit Pure Boost is definitely primed for summertime. But, with only 266 pairs released, it’s certainly a quality over quantity kind of sneaker. If you were one of the lucky 266, you better not let us catch you wearing sandals instead. Come on man!

Nike SB Koston 2 Max

What the Koston 2 Max lacks in the hype or “swag” department, it more than makes up for with a minamalistic silhouette, legendary tech and super clean colorways. That makes the Koston 2 Max an excellent choice…particularly the fantastic ‘Light Crimson’ makeup. If they’re almost lighter than feathers in your hand, imagine how great they feel on foot.

Nike Flyknit Racer

You already know what these are. If you’ve been fortunate enough to catch any of the Nike Flyknit Racer releases in the past, you already know they’re one of the best and most comfortable summertime sneaker options in your arsenal. And we’re really feeling the recent colorways Nike has put out lately. The white/black and the ‘sport turqouise’ iterations are particularly awesome.

Nike Flyknit Trainer

Yeah, after Kanye spent last summer rocking the Flyknit Trainer, the surrounding hype made these beauties tough to cop. But, if you got on the Flyknit Trainer bandwagon before the hype, or you simply bit the bullet and paid the higher resale costs, you better be picking these over sandals this summer. These are proper.

Nike Air Max 'Breathe / Barefoot' Collection

The Nike Air Max ‘Breathe’ collection was engineered with summer in mind. Employing a mash-up of breathable mesh uppers, taped seams and elastic laces, all draped over several of our favorite Air Max silhouettes, the ‘Breathe’ collection is the right choice for summer. Always choose Air over sandals. Always.

Well, piggybacking on their fantastic celebration of the Stan Smith this year, adidas has a winner on their hands with the new ZX Flux. Already dubbed this year’s Roshe, the Flux has already dropped several colorways that sold out with the quickness. A modern, minimalistic silo matched with top-notch colorways and a great retail price, the ZX Flux is going to make waves in the coming months. Keep your eyes peeled…

Last year wasn’t just a fluke for Ewing Athletics and 2014 is looking right already with the return of the Ewing Center retro in this dope “Knicks” colorway. While the Knicks may not be making much noise in the NBA post-season this year, fans of the colorway will certainly have their kicks on point. Look for these to drop in early April.

Air Jordan IX "Barons"

Release Date: 4/5/2014

Though many of us MJ aficionados prefer to pretend that his baseball career never existed, Jordan Brand is making repressing those memories a lot tougher with these dope Air Jordan IXs.

Air Jordan I "Barons"

Release Date: 4/5/2014

And what would a new Jordan Brand theme be without using the iconic Air Jordan I High as a base? These Is are fire.

Nike Air Bakin

Nike Basketball Elite & Elite "Hero" Collection

Release Date: 4/11/2014 and 5/9/2014 (Hero)

We all know that Nike drops their “Elite” collection of signature hoops shoes right around the time the NBA playoff chase starts to heat up, and this year will be no different. Only this time, we’ve already seen the announcement of two different sets of Elites, and rumors of more to come. While the price tag may present a significant barrier of entry, the Elite series (both April’s Elite “Team” and May’s “Hero” collections) are looking proper.

Air Jordan II "Cement"

Release Date: 4/12/2014

Often left out of all the retro fun, the Air Jordan II is making it’s way back into the hearts and closets of sneakerheads everywhere this spring. First up is this dope new “Cement” colorway. The OGs may cringe a little, but these have been growing on us every time we see new pics pop up.

Reebok Insta Pump Fury Collabs

Release Date: 3/31/2014 (Garbstore; International at least) and 4/12/2014 (Sneaker Politics)

One of the many sneakers celebrating an anniversary in 2014 is the Reebok Insta Pump Fury. Ringing in it’s 20th birthday with a series of collaborations, the Insta Pump Fury has been an extremely hot sneaker the past few months…and, as we move into spring, it’s only getting hotter. Though some upcoming collabs, like the one from CNCPTS, have only been teased so far, we know there is some heat coming down the pipes in the next few months. In particular though, we absolutely love the 20th anniversary Insta Pump Fury collabs from both Garbstore and Sneaker Politics dropping soon. Don’t sleep on these.

Nike Air Max 1 FB Premium QS "Mercurial" Pack

Anteater x Saucony Jazz Original “Sea & Sand”

Release Date: 4/1/2014 (International); hopefully April 2014 in US

Premier won’t be the only brand bringing the heat with their dope Saucony collabs. Russian streetwear brand Anteater has cooked up a fantastic look for the Saucony Jazz Original, dubbed the “Sea & Sand.” With that familiar color blocking on the toe box, paired with a super clean gum sole, these are going to be a perfect stunt pair for the upcoming spring/summer months.

Nike LeBron 11 Low "Easter"

Release Date: 4/18/2014

Yeah, you probably already know what it is. Releasing alongside the other Nike Easter releases, the Lebron XI Low marks the first retail appearance of LBJ’s eleventh signature. With that nice white upper offset by sweet mint green paisley hits, these are certainly the standout pair from the Swoosh’s Easter pack.

Nike Foamposite Pro "Yeezy"

Release Date: 4/19/2014

“Yeezys,” “Blinks,” whatever you want to call them, the inspiration for the most talked-about Foamposite release of the year is undeniable. These are gonna be tough, and pricey to get a hold of…but they are pretty awesome.

Air Jordan XI Low "Green Snakeskin"

Release Date: 4/19/2014

Air Jordan XI Low GS "Aqua Safari"

Release Date: 4/19/2014

While most of the die-hards will likely be targeting the “Green Snakeskin” Lows on April 19th, ladies and small-footers can rejoice too, as they’re getting these awesome “Aqua Safari” XI Lows on the same day. If JB only made these in men’s sizes…

Jordan Flight Runner

Release Date: 5/1/2014

With the rising popularity of running shoes in the US sneaker market, this seems like a no-brainer. But starting in May, Jordan Brand is coming after running enthusiasts full force with the Jordan Flight Runner. It’s first foray into running shoes, expect to see a lot of the Flight Runner in the coming months.

Air Jordan XI Low "Concord"

Release Date: 5/3/2014

Yup, they’re real, and yes, they’re really hitting retail. Seen on His Airness’ feet a few months back, the interwebs were abuzz with rumors and speculation. We’ll have to wait until May 5th to get our hands on them…but oh baby, these “Concord” Air Jordan XI Lows are neck-breakers.

Air Jordan VI "Carmine"

Release Date: 5/24/2014

One of the most popular colorways of the Air Jordan VI, the “Carmine,” is finally coming back, and it’s not in a CDP this time! Prior to 2008’s Countdown Pack, which paired the fan-favorite VIs with the not-nearly-as-popular Air Jordan XVII, these OG gems hadn’t seen retail since their original debut back in 1991. These are gonna be hot!

Air Jordan I "Carmine"

Release Date: 5/24/2014

Similar to April’s Air Jordan “Barons” pack, JB is also bringing the Carmine colorway to the Air Jordan I High. Though they’ll no doubt be overshadowed by the popularity of the VI, these Is are killer, and they’re going to be a nice consolation prize for those of us who’ll inevitably strike out with the VI.

Nike LeBron 11 Low "Dunkman"

Release Date: 5/30/2014

The Dunkman makeup is just one of the many great colorways the LeBron line has brought us over the years. Traditionally a mainstay of the hightop silo, this year, the “Dunkman” colorway makes it’s debut on the Nike LeBron XI Low. We like-y.

Air Jordan II White/Red

Release Date: 6/7/2014

Last seen paired with the AJ XXI in 2008’s Countdown pack, another OG Air Jordan will be making it’s way back to retail in 2014. This time, it’s the classic white/red Air Jordan II. This classic really brings back the memories. Insta-cop.

Air Jordan XI Low "Space Jam"

Release Date: 6/14/2014

With the success the Air Jordan XI Low has seen, particularly over the past 2-3 years, it’s no surprise that Jordan Brand is going in on the silhouette this year. With dope new colorways like the “Green Snakeskin” and “Aqua Safari”, along with the familiar feel of May’s “Concord” drop, 2014 was looking great for the XI Low. But, prepare yourself. When the “Space Jam” XI Low hits in early June, it’s going DOWN. JB dropping a stunner just in time for summer.

Etonic Akeem The Dream White/Red

Release Date: 6/15/2014

Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel Lyte V "Cove" & "Mint Leaf"

Release Date: Spring 2014

While an official release date has not been set just yet, with the recent stream of teaser shots for both the “Cove” and “Mint Leaf” colorways of Ronnie Fieg’s Asics Gel Lyte Vs, we can only guess, and hope, that these will be available this spring. For the lucky few who will be able to get their hands on either pair, we’re sure these will be a spring/summer staple for 2014 and likely a favorite for many all year.
